Relating To Song Lyrics

Music has been a massive part of my life; it’s been a healer, an outlet, a motivator and it was also the subject of my profession for many years as a club DJ.

For me, relating to songs lyrics is something that has often brought comfort in dark times, so I want to touch on that today.

Even people who aren’t really into music will have connected with a song and/or its lyrics at some point in their life.
It’s one of the many beautiful gifts of music – its ability to stir up emotions and make you feel as though the song was written just for you.

The feeling that someone else out there knows exactly how you feel is sometimes all you need.

For me right now, no other song does that more than Steven Wilson – Pariah.
I’ve been a big Steven Wilson for many years and have loved Pariah since it was released.

It immediately resonated with me.

But lately every single word describes exactly how I feel, confined to my bed, unable to walk and trying to remain strong while feeling increasingly lonely.

I don’t tend to watch many music videos, but this one is beautiful in its simplicity and adds to the overall flavour of the lyrics.

I almost see Ninet as an angel, comforting you in your monochromatic world of misery. The look in her eyes conveying wisdom and pain in an eternal motherly comfort.

The explosion of colours I interpret as the hope and life her words have imparted into you.
Steven bowing his head to signal that it is still difficult, but the hope is now there surrounding him.

Listening to this masterpiece tears my heart open… I cry… but it helps.
It’s like a small release, a momentary release of a valve.
Five minutes of letting go, letting the walls collapse, only to build them back stronger.

Dave.

Pariah – Steven Wilson

I’m tired of weakness
Tired of my feet of clay
I’m tired of days to come
I’m tired of yesterday
And all the worn out things that I ever said
Now it’s much too late
The words stay in my head

So the day will begin again
Take comfort from me
It’s up to you now
You’re still here and you’ll dig in again
That’s comfort to you
It’s up to you now
So pariah you’ll begin again
Take comfort from me
And I will take comfort from you

I’m tired of Facebook
Tired of my failing health
I’m tired of everyone
And that includes myself
Well being alone now
It doesn’t bother me
But not knowing if you are
That’s been hell you see

So the day will begin again
Take comfort from me
It’s up to you now
You’re still here
And you’ll dig in again
That’s comfort to you
It’s up to you now
So pariah you’ll begin again
Take comfort from me
It will take time

Don’t you worry
Don’t worry about a thing
‘Cause nothing really dies
Nothing really ends
